Metamorphosis starts with Met.

چکیده
J uvenile hormone (JH) has long been known to be a potent regulator of metamorphosis in most insects, but learning how it acts has been hindered until now by failure to find an entry point for its mechanism of action. Using the beetle Tribolium castaneum, Konopova and Jindra (1) have achieved a result long and fruitlessly sought in Drosophila, which is reported in this issue of PNAS. They have identified a key component of the pathway JH uses in controlling metamorphosis; this component is the gene TcMet.

Evolution of salamander life cycles: a major-effect quantitative trait locus contributes to discrete and continuous variation for metamorphic timing.
The evolution of alternate modes of development may occur through genetic changes in metamorphic timing. This hypothesis was examined by crossing salamanders that express alternate developmental modes: metamorphosis vs. paedomorphosis. Three strains were used in the crossing design: Ambystoma tigrinum tigrinum (Att; metamorph), wild-caught A. mexicanum (Am; paedomorph), and laboratory Am (paedo...
متن کاملCommon and Distinct Roles of Juvenile Hormone Signaling Genes in Metamorphosis of Holometabolous and Hemimetabolous Insects
Insect larvae metamorphose to winged and reproductive adults either directly (hemimetaboly) or through an intermediary pupal stage (holometaboly). In either case juvenile hormone (JH) prevents metamorphosis until a larva has attained an appropriate phase of development. In holometabolous insects, JH acts through its putative receptor Methoprene-tolerant (Met) to regulate Krüppel-homolog 1 (Kr-h...
متن کاملMET Is Required for the Maximal Action of 20-Hydroxyecdysone during Bombyx Metamorphosis
Little is known about how the putative juvenile hormone (JH) receptor, the bHLH-PAS transcription factor MET, is involved in 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E; the molting hormone) action. Here we report that two MET proteins found in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, participate in 20E signal transduction. Met is 20E responsive and its expression peaks during molting and pupation, when the 20E titer is high. A...
متن کاملJuvenile hormone resistance gene Methoprene-tolerant controls entry into metamorphosis in the beetle Tribolium castaneum.
Besides being a spectacular developmental process, metamorphosis is key to insect success. Entry into metamorphosis is controlled by juvenile hormone (JH). In larvae, JH prevents pupal and adult morphogenesis, thus keeping the insect in its immature state. How JH signals to preclude metamorphosis is poorly understood, and a JH receptor remains unknown. One candidate for the JH receptor role is ...
متن کاملSynaptogenesis in the mushroom body calyx during metamorphosis in the honeybee Apis mellifera: an electron microscopic study.
The goals of this study are to determine relationships between synaptogenesis and morphogenesis within the mushroom body calyx of the honeybee Apis mellifera and to find out how the microglomerular structure characteristic for the mature calyx is established during metamorphosis. We show that synaptogenesis in the mushroom body calycal neuropile starts in early metamorphosis (stages P1-P3), bef...
